Know your Regulations

When it comes to staying up to date on your limits and regs, it is best to go straight to the source. There's no substitute for the Hunting & Trapping Regulations Synopsis that can be considered more accurate and up to date for the region you are in. There are apps like Hunt Buddy that make it easier to navigate, but if you ever have to have a chat with Conservation it's a good idea to know you checked the official synopsis.

The synopsis is a good starting point, and once you research the region you'll be hunting you might come across some restrictions for your WMU. This is your next stop to begin planning your access.

John Barklow is a US Navy Veteran and wilderness survival pro. His content is such a wealth of information, I think everyone travelling the backcountry can benefit from reading into it. There's no better intro to his content than the Trip Planning Checklist. Learn more about some bare essentials for gear, as well as safety protocol that can be applied to any remote excursion whether it is on foot or in a vehicle.

Terrain Planning

John Barklow covers some  more key topics here that lay the foundation for planning your trips. For those that know me here at TNN, I rely very heavily on the quality of my information in order to squeeze most value out of my time in the field. The bare minimum is understanding your terrain, as covered in this video. I usually complement this with some knowledge of forest cover, watershed analysis, and wildlife data for the area I am in.
